Irene Khan named permanent representative to UN with deputy minister rank

The government has appointed internationally renowned human rights activist Irene Khan as Bangladesh’s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations. She has since been granted the rank of deputy minister.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification today, Wednesday, granting Irene Khan deputy minister rank. It states that while holding this post, Irene Khan will receive the rank, salary, allowances and other benefits of a deputy minister.

Irene Khan succeeds Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh’s current permanent representative to the UN.

Irene Khan currently serves as the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. She previously served as Secretary General of the UK-based international human rights organization Amnesty International.
