CUMILLA — Police have arrested two men accused of forcibly assaulting a woman entrepreneur in Cumilla’s Chandina upazila and recording video of the attack on a mobile phone, officials said.

The two were detained early Friday near the government hospital in Chandina upazila’s Mahichail area.

Police identified the suspects as Mohammad Rubel, 28, a driver and the son of Delwar Hossain of Mahichail Bazar, and Mohammad Jamal, 40, son of the late Ismail Hossain of the same area.

The woman told police she had learned beauty parlor work and was running a parlor at Mahichail Bazar to become self-reliant. For some time, Rubel and Jamal had been harassing her and making indecent proposals, she said. When she refused, they threatened to create an obscene video of her using information technology and post it on social media, and demanded 300,000 taka in extortion money.

When she still did not comply, the two men went to her beauty parlor on Thursday afternoon, forcibly assaulted her and recorded the attack on a mobile phone, she said. She then called 999, the national police emergency number, and officers reached the scene to rescue her.

Chandina police station officer-in-charge Atiqur Rahman said the woman filed a written complaint. “We took up the case and arrested them in a special drive on charges of producing and storing pornography, intimidation to defame and sexual harassment,” he said. Police are investigating whether others were involved and will take appropriate action based on the inquiry, he added.
