College student’s body recovered from Dakatia river in Cumilla

The body of a college student who went missing after drowning in the Dakatia river in Nangalkot upazila of Cumilla has been recovered. Around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday (May 30), a diving team recovered the body of the student, Shihab Hossain, 18, from under water hyacinth in the river. Nangalkot police station OC Arifur Rahman confirmed the matter.

Shihab Hossain was the son of Zahirul Islam Shipon of Narandia village in the South Raikot union of the upazila and was a class-eleven student at Chittagong Naval College.

Local sources said Shihab had come home for the Eid holidays. On Friday afternoon, he went with several friends to the bank of the Dakatia river. While swimming across, he was swept away by a strong current, and his friends tried but failed to rescue him.

On receiving the news, a unit of the Chouddagram Fire Service reached the scene and carried out an initial search. As no trace of Shihab was found, a special diving team was called from Chandpur. The divers searched extensively until Friday evening without finding him, and the operation was suspended for the night. When it resumed on Saturday morning, the body was recovered from under water hyacinth around 7:30 a.m.

OC Arifur Rahman said the body was recovered through a joint operation by the fire service and the diving team. Police had been at the scene from the start, and the body has been handed over to the family.
