Mobarak Hossain Emon, also known as David Emon, described by police as a leading criminal in Chattogram, has been arrested. A team from Chattogram district police arrested him in Jashore on Wednesday morning.

The Chattogram district superintendent of police, Masud Alam, confirmed the arrest to reporters. He said: “The criminal Emon has been arrested along with five associates. All those arrested are shooters.”

Police say Emon is one of the associates of another leading criminal, Sajjad Ali, also known as Boro Sajjad, who is absconding abroad. At least 15 cases are pending against him. His name has come up in a number of extortion and intimidation incidents in Chattogram over the past few years.

Mobarak Hossain, known as Emon, is the son of Md Musa of the Kanchannagar area of Fatikchhari upazila in Chattogram. According to police, he is an accused in a total of seven cases, including a double murder in the Baklia area on 30 March 2025 and the killing of the criminal known as Dhakaiya Akbar in the Patenga sea beach area of the city on the night of 23 May the same year.

Police say they have information that Mobarak Hossain has carried at least 15 to 20 firearms and that he is skilled in the use of weapons. Police also allege that he was responsible for hiring the gunmen and the motorcycles used in the Baklia double murder.

Police officers said two people are currently leading criminal activity in Chattogram on behalf of Sajjad Ali, also known as Boro Sajjad, who is absconding abroad. One of them is Mobarak Hossain. The group was previously led inside the country by Sajjad Hossain, known as Chhoto Sajjad. With him now in prison, Mobarak Hossain and Mohammad Raihan are leading the group. At least eight cases are also pending against Raihan on various allegations including extortion, weapons and murder.

Police contend that at least 50 gunmen and associates are active in Boro Sajjad’s group. They say Mohammad Raihan and Mobarak Hossain have been regularly demanding extortion money from various individuals and businesses on his behalf, and that despite complaints from those targeted it had not been possible to arrest them.

The allegations set out by police have not been tested in court.
