A Khulna court sentenced six people to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a robbery case involving assailants who posed as police. Four of the convicted defendants remained at large when the verdict was delivered, while the court acquitted another defendant.
Judge Md. Khurshid Alam of Khulna’s Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict Tuesday, Aug. 4.
The convicted defendants are Mir Selim, Mahabubur Rahman, Md. Liton Dewan, Nasir Gazi, also known as Kabila, Kalam Dhali and Shamim Biswas. The court acquitted Jihadul Biswas.
Shamim received an additional 10-year term of rigorous imprisonment under Section 412 and a fine of 50 thousand taka. Failure to pay the fine will add another six months of rigorous imprisonment. Liton Dewan and Nasir Gazi were present for the verdict.
Court sources said egg trader Md. Rabiul Islam closed his shop at Kapilmuni market in Paikgachha upazila on April 4, 2023, and left for home with an employee at about 11:45 p.m.
Near a former chairman’s home in Nasirpur village, four people on two motorcycles stopped them. One wore a police uniform and the other three wore civilian clothing.
The group told Rabiul that there was an arrest warrant against him and ordered him to accompany them to the police station. After putting him on a motorcycle, they traveled toward Magurkhali in Dumuria upazila rather than the station.
When Rabiul asked where they were taking him, the assailants threatened to kill him, took 1 lakh taka in cash and an expensive mobile phone, and abandoned him. He filed a case against unidentified people at Paikgachha Police Station the following day.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Md. Shahjul Islam submitted a charge sheet against seven people on July 30 that year.
