Flood protection embankment fails, inundates 15 villages in Kulaura

MOULVIBAZAR — A flood protection embankment along the Gogalichhara in Gazipur, in the Kulaura Sadar union of Moulvibazar district, has collapsed, inundating 15 villages and causing extensive crop damage.

The embankment breached late Tuesday night, April 28, after heavy rainfall.

Floodwaters from hill runoff rushed in with great force, submerging about 100 bighas of aush paddy fields, boro rice, aush seedbeds and more than 100 fish ponds across the villages of Bagajura, Hasanpur, Sripur, Karergram, Minarmahal, Saidpur, Gazipur, Purandapur, Haripur and Barkapan in the Sadar union.

Nadim Mahmud Raju, member of ward 4 of the Sadar Union Parishad, said boro rice in 15 villages including Gazipur had been destroyed by the breach.

Acting Union Parishad Chairman Abdush Shahid said the breach had caused extensive damage to crops and fish farms across 15 villages.

Kulaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Mohiuddin said he had visited areas in the Kulaura and Joychandi unions damaged by the hill runoff, and that the union councils were preparing damage assessments.
