Whether dressed for an occasion, visiting a scenic place or simply in the mood for a photograph, people usually want to look their best in a selfie. But holding a phone too close can make the nose look unusually large and the sides of the jaw appear to recede. The effect is generally caused by the distance between the face and the camera lens.
For a natural-looking selfie, hold the phone at least 2 to 2.5 feet, or about 30 to 36 inches, from the face. TV9 reported that extending the arm as far as possible before taking the photograph can produce a better result. Most smartphone front cameras use wide-angle lenses. At close range, they enlarge the center of the face and distort its proportions, an effect known as lens distortion. Framing the photograph from farther away better preserves the face’s natural shape.
Natural sunlight generally produces the best results. Face toward the light rather than away from it, and avoid standing in harsh direct sun. Softer morning or afternoon light, or light from a nearby window, spreads more evenly across the face. A phone’s front flash can make the face appear overly white or flat, so avoiding it may produce a more natural image.
