Colombia once again showed their dominance in World Cup Group K. By winning a tough battle against DR Congo 1-0, the South American side secured a place in the knockout round, and the team led by James Rodriguez has also taken top spot in the group.

In the match on Wednesday (June 24), Colombia wanted to play attacking football from the start, but Congo’s defence frustrated them several times in the first half. Neither side found the net before the break.

The pace of the match changed in the second half. Colombia got the goal they wanted, took the lead, and that single-goal margin ultimately brought them the win. Congo also tried to equalise, but Colombia’s organised defence foiled all their efforts.

Colombia had started their World Cup campaign by beating Uzbekistan in their first match. With a win against Congo too, their tally after two matches stands at a full six points, and they have secured their ticket to the last 32 with one match still in hand.

Portugal, meanwhile, beat Uzbekistan heavily in their match but had shared points with DR Congo in their first game, leaving them behind Colombia after two matches. Top spot in Group K now belongs entirely to Colombia.

Buoyed by consecutive wins, Colombia will take the field in their final group match with the aim of finishing as group champions, while Portugal will have to fight to reclaim top spot and secure their own knockout berth.
