Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the last of his career, marking the beginning of the end for one of football’s most storied chapters.
In an interview during the tournament, Ronaldo said: “I’m enjoying this World Cup — the fans, the people, the whole atmosphere is wonderful. But this is definitely my last World Cup. I’ve already made the decision.”
Ronaldo first appeared at a World Cup in 2006. He has since worn Portugal’s jersey in six consecutive tournaments, making 2026 his sixth and final World Cup.
Alongside the emotional announcement, Ronaldo displayed his trademark humor. Recalling an incident on a flight, he said: “I realized one of the flight attendants was Argentine. The way she looked at me and immediately turned away, I just knew. I told her — look, I know you’re Argentine and you don’t like me! But don’t worry, my wife is actually Argentine.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner holds numerous records across club and international football, including the all-time record for most international goals.
His departure from the international stage after the 2026 World Cup will mark the end of one of the most celebrated rivalries in football history.
