There is finally good news on the liquefied natural gas, or LNG, supply front. A ship carrying LNG has arrived for U.S. company Excelerate Energy’s floating terminal.

The vessel “FLEX Courageous” docked at the floating terminal off Moheshkhali at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The LNG-carrying ship, purchased on the international spot market, arrived from Cameron port in the United States. LNG supply through Excelerate Energy’s terminal was set to begin around 9:30 p.m. Officials at Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) hope this will help ease the LNG shortage for now.

Supply of 100 million cubic feet of LNG through the Excelerate Energy terminal began from 1:30 p.m., using LNG that had already been stored at the terminal.

That has brought some improvement in gas supply since midday. The nearby floating terminal belonging to the domestic Summit Group is separately supplying 570 million cubic feet of gas. Combined, the two terminals were providing 670 million cubic feet of gas as of 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

An official at the deputy general manager (LNG) level at Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited said: “Based on the two terminals’ capacity, we’ll have to wait until Sunday morning to get 1,100 million cubic feet of gas.”

The LNG supply trouble began on April 21. It started when a fire broke out in the boiler of U.S. company Excelerate Energy’s floating terminal. After running for two weeks, the terminal then fell into an LNG shortage. Around the same time, the domestic Summit terminal was also shut because of an LNG shortage.

Supply conditions are expected to improve once the two terminals begin delivering a full 1,100 million cubic feet of gas from Sunday. However, there is uncertainty over how long this supply level can be sustained, since LNG-ship arrivals matching the month’s demand have not yet been confirmed.
