“The government is implementing its election manifesto. At the same time, the July National Charter as it was signed is also being implemented,” Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s press secretary Abu Abdullah M Saleh said at a news conference held by the prime minister’s office on Saturday to mark the government’s five months in office.

The press secretary said: “During the previous fascist government there was a lot of talk of development. But where was that development? In many places there was decline, most of all in religious, social and family values. Until mental and family values improve, development is not possible in any field.” He said the prime minister was himself working for a qualitative change in the country through action, not words, and had called on everyone — whatever their party or view — to build a prosperous Bangladesh, saying differences of view could be settled at the ballot but everyone must come together to build the country.

Saleh said the prime minister had moved away from a culture of sycophancy, praising no one as was often seen before, and was not becoming cut off from people but working among them, going to a district outside Dhaka every month to increase public engagement. “This year’s budget is an achievement of the government. After the budget passed, no commodity price rose and there was no unrest in people’s lives. It is a life-friendly budget,” he added. The prime minister’s adviser and office spokesman Mahdi Amin and additional press secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon were present. The BNP government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office on 17 February after being elected in the 13th parliamentary election on 12 February this year.
