At least 14 government soldiers were killed in an attack by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in southern Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, a Yemeni military official told AFP on Sunday.
The official said government forces repelled a surprise Houthi attack in the Hais area south of Hodeidah. The clashes, which began at dawn on Saturday, lasted several hours.
The military official added that the Houthi rebels also suffered casualties, though he did not provide a specific death toll for the rebel side.
US airstrikes have previously destroyed several Houthi military facilities. Despite a UN-mediated ceasefire in 2022, large-scale fighting between the two sides had largely been suspended until recently.
On Friday, Houthi rebels threatened to attack Saudi Arabian airports and key installations. The rebel group, a key partner in Iran’s regional resistance axis against Israel and the United States, has accused Saudi Arabia of attempting to block an Iranian aircraft from landing.
