Turkey’s Istanbul Airport has emerged as one of the most powerful hubs in Europe’s aviation sector. In less than eight years since opening, the airport is now competing with Europe’s established major airports in passenger traffic, cargo handling, and the use of modern technology.
In July this year, 8.15 million passengers passed through Istanbul Airport. During the same period, London’s Heathrow Airport handled roughly 7.9 million passengers. As a result, Istanbul surpassed Heathrow as Europe’s busiest airport for that month.
The airport, formally opened on October 29, 2018, was built from the outset with ambitious expansion goals. Within a short time, it has become one of the leading aviation hubs in Europe and the world.
Several key factors lie behind the airport’s rapid rise. These include Turkey’s strategic geographic location, the extensive international network of national carrier Turkish Airlines, and the large-scale infrastructure built at the airport.
Positioned at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Istanbul is used by a large number of passengers as an international transit hub. According to Turkish officials, roughly 1.5 billion people across 67 countries are reachable within a four-hour flight from Istanbul.
The airport has also demonstrated new capabilities on the technological front. For the first time in Europe, a system has been introduced here allowing three runways to be used simultaneously for takeoffs or landings. This has increased aviation capacity while reducing wait times.
Istanbul Airport has also advanced rapidly in cargo transport. In the first six months of this year, the airport’s cargo volume rose 10.8 percent compared to the same period last year, surpassing 1 million tonnes. This has put Istanbul ahead of Frankfurt as Europe’s busiest cargo airport.
Additionally, a direct metro connection to the city has made passenger travel easier. Plans are underway for a fourth runway in the future. Long-term, the airport’s capacity target has been set at up to 200 million passengers annually.
According to analysts, by leveraging rapid expansion, modern infrastructure, and Turkey’s geographic advantage, Istanbul Airport is emerging as Europe’s new aviation powerhouse.
