Russia’s air defences shot down dozens of Ukrainian drones heading toward Moscow overnight, the capital’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, claimed.
Speaking on Tuesday, he said Ukraine had stepped up long-range drone attacks on Russia in recent months, particularly targeting energy infrastructure — installations seen as a key source of the Kremlin’s revenue for funding the war.
The war has now entered its fifth year, AFP reported from Moscow. On the Russian state-owned Max platform, Sobyanin wrote: “The air defence forces of Russia’s defence ministry shot down six enemy drones flying toward Moscow.”
That brought the total number of drones downed to 46, he said, adding that emergency workers were operating at the sites where drone debris had fallen.
Earlier, Sobyanin said Russia’s air defence system was working to repel “enemy drones” approaching the capital.
A few days earlier, Russia claimed to have downed 660 Ukrainian drones between Thursday and Friday — a rarely seen number of drones brought down at once since the war began.
Last week, a Ukrainian attack set fire to an oil refinery southeast of Moscow.
