Ali Akbar Dareini, a researcher at Iran’s Center for Strategic Studies, has claimed that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran sets no conditions on releasing Iran’s seized assets, yet Washington has still not honoured that pledge.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Dareini said: “The United States is obliged to release Iran’s seized assets immediately and without any conditions. But they have not kept their commitment.”
He said the memorandum was to be implemented in two phases: in the first, confidence-building measures would be taken, and in the second, talks would be advanced toward a final agreement.
Dareini alleged that the United States had already failed to meet its obligations under the MoU, which could hamper future negotiations.
“In its first article, the MoU committed the United States, on behalf of itself and Israel, to halt war and military operations on all fronts,” he said. “But they later made a separate agreement with Israel and Lebanon, which conflicts with the MoU. This shows the United States is not implementing the memorandum in good faith.”
He further alleged: “The United States has illegally withheld Iran’s money and is now holding that money hostage.”
Dareini’s remarks reflect Iran’s position and allegations. No immediate response was available from the United States.
