Ordering the accused member of parliament to resign without taking visible legal action against the main culprits of the vandalism and attack on the Radda clinic in Mirpur is an attempt at a “safe exit”, said Sadik Kayem, vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).
In a statement on Thursday, he said the public has repeatedly seen the BNP’s so-called expulsion dramas in the past, and such political tactics to cover up serious crimes will no longer be accepted. The government must prove its sincerity by identifying everyone directly and indirectly involved in the attack through a fair and impartial investigation and quickly bringing them to justice, he said; otherwise the public will see the whole affair as a political sacrifice and PR stunt in the face of public anger.
Sadik Kayem alleged that since the attack came to light, ministers and MPs of the BNP government have been making incoherent and contradictory statements in an attempt to divert attention from it.
He also demanded that the damaged Radda clinic be rebuilt quickly and maternal and child health services restored, and called for an immediate end to the politics of land grabbing and extortion by ruling party MPs, both elected and in reserved women’s seats, across the country.
