DHAKA — Bangladesh is moving to appoint 77,000 teachers at MPO-listed educational institutions, Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon said Monday.

Milon, who heads the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, told reporters that 32,500 teacher promotions are stuck in the High Court and that the government has not been able to carry out 32,000 new appointments either. “At the same time, 77,000 teachers need to be appointed at MPO-listed institutions. Work is underway,” he said.

The minister spoke to reporters at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

He said about 13,000 cases related to the education and primary and mass education sectors are pending in court. “How do we untangle this case backlog? What can be done? Please give us some time,” he said.

Milon said he expected the government’s various initiatives to improve education to begin implementation within 180 days. “The time frame is 180 days. You will see that everything has begun. This beginning is our first step,” he said.

“Once a tree is planted, it keeps bearing fruit. We want to start with momentum. We want the scope of our work to be wide. If we start well, we will gradually be less pressured toward the end,” he added.
