TEHRAN — Iran has demanded compensation from five Middle Eastern countries, accusing them of aiding attacks carried out by Israel and the United States. The countries have been accused of allowing their territory to be used and of taking part in unlawful aggression.
The countries are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan, the Anadolu news agency reported Tuesday (April 14).
Iran’s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, sent a formal letter on the matter. The letter was delivered Monday local time to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and to the president of the Security Council.
The letter said that based on monitoring and assessment reports by Iran’s armed forces, there is evidence that the United States and Israel used the territory of the listed countries to attack Iran. That information had already been submitted to the U.N. Security Council, Iran said.
In the letter, Iravani said Iran had noted in earlier reports that the aggressors — the United States and Israel — had used the territory of those countries and taken direct part in illegal attacks on some civilian targets.
The letter also alleged that the five countries had breached their international obligations and must therefore pay compensation for all material and moral damages inflicted on Iran.
The letter said the five countries had provided military facilities to the aggressors and become involved in unlawful activity. Under U.N. General Assembly Resolution 3314 of Dec. 14, 1974, such steps are entirely illegal, the letter said. The countries had also encouraged direct armed attacks on Iran, it added.
Through such actions, the countries had seriously violated international rules and obligations, the Iranian official said. They must therefore bear full responsibility for the extensive material and moral damages caused to Iran.
The letter also called for an immediate halt to such activities.
