Iran has blacklisted 45 tankers over alleged violations of the rules for transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and says it will take action against any vessel that carries cargo using these tankers.

The newly established Persian Gulf Strait Authority, an Iranian body, said in a post on X on Sunday night that the blacklisted ships could face fines, seizure and confiscation of their cargo.

The blacklisted vessels include large crude oil tankers, ships carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and vessels transporting clean petroleum products.

The warning came just days after the United States threatened to impose what it called “the harshest sanctions in history” on Iran, with Iran saying its response to any new US threat would be devastating.

Iran has previously said that ship owners must obtain Tehran’s approval to transit the Strait of Hormuz and must pay for various services, including security.

Before the current conflict, the strait — one of the world’s most critical energy corridors — carried around 20% of the world’s daily crude oil and LNG supply. Shipping through Hormuz has fallen sharply amid the ongoing conflict.
