With supply disrupted by continuous rain and flooding, the price of green chilli, along with leafy greens and vegetables, is rising sharply. It had been above 200 taka for some time, but has now crossed 300 taka. Green chilli is selling at 320 taka in some markets in the capital, and at 310 or 300 taka in others. Sellers say chilli spoils quickly because of the rain. Supplies of other vegetables are also much lower. This has left ordinary people in difficulty.

This information was gathered on Saturday, July 25, from visits to several markets in the capital.

According to sellers, new green chilli is selling at 300 taka a kilogram, while the price of old green chilli has risen to as much as 320 taka a kilogram.

They said the price of green chilli was 120 to 130 taka only a week ago. They claimed the price had risen because of the continuous rain.

A vegetable seller at Shukrabad market, Anwar, said that within a week the prices of not only vegetables but of many things have risen. He sometimes has to argue with buyers over prices.

He said: “We have to buy at higher prices; how are we to sell cheaper? If the rain eases, prices may come down.”

A homemaker who came to market, Tamanna, said prices are truly beyond bearing. “The price of green chilli keeps rising, and it is an essential thing in cooking. How am I to cook without green chilli? The prices of other vegetables are also high. Even buying small quantities of two or three kinds of vegetable costs about 200 taka.”
