Prime Minister Tarique Rahman wants to see production at the first factory in the China Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) under construction at Anwara in Chattogram within the next 18 months.

The executive chairman of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), Ashik Chowdhury, said the developer had accepted the prime minister’s challenge and promised to go into production within the set time.

The BEZA executive chairman gave the information at the foundation-stone laying ceremony for the Bangladesh-China economic zone in the Belchura area of Anwara in Chattogram on Monday, 27 July.

Ashik Chowdhury said at the event: “There was a meeting with the chairman of the developer company during the prime minister’s visit to China last month. Although three to five years was mentioned at first for opening the zone, the prime minister threw down the challenge of opening the first factory within 18 months. The chairman of the developer company then promised to go into production within that time.”

Calling for full cooperation with Chinese investors, he said: “Foreign investors are our guests. Alongside earning a profit on their investment, they will create employment for thousands of people in the country. If this zone opens quickly, the face of this area will change.”

He called on local public representatives and residents to stand by the investors.

Urging joint work to solve any problem, the BEZA executive chairman said: “The country’s interest must be placed above everything.”

Noting that there is no alternative to investment for the country’s progress, he called on everyone to cooperate in attracting foreign investment.
