CHATTOGRAM — Fourteen oil tankers have arrived at Chattogram port in May, with five more expected this month, as part of government efforts to ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply, officials said.
The 19 ships are carrying 385,000 metric tonnes of diesel, 67,000 tonnes of jet fuel, 26,500 tonnes of octane and 75,000 tonnes of furnace oil, according to the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC).
Mohammad Zahid Hossain, BPC’s general manager for trade and operations, told state news agency BSS on Friday that 14 tankers had arrived so far and five more would dock at Chattogram port in the remaining days of the month.
Hossain said 16 ships carrying refined and crude oil have been confirmed for June.
The government regularly imports refined and crude oil to meet domestic demand, he said, adding that another oil tanker was scheduled to dock at Chattogram port the same day.
BPC said various tankers carrying diesel, jet fuel, octane and crude oil have arrived in Chattogram this month. Fuel oil imports are a continuous process between the government and BPC, and 16 ships have also been confirmed for June, leaving the country with sufficient fuel reserves, the corporation said.
A tanker named MT Fossil set out for Chattogram on Monday carrying 100,000 tonnes of crude oil, BPC said.
Commodore Mahmudul Malek, managing director of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), said the crude oil tanker would reach Chattogram port on May 23 if everything went according to plan.
Earlier, on May 6, an oil tanker named MT Ninemia carrying 100,000 tonnes of crude oil from the Saudi port of Yanbu arrived at the Kutubdia channel, BPC said.
