Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has told the government to step down if it cannot bring the killers of Hadi to justice. “Resign if you cannot try Hadi’s killers. The next government will try them,” he said at an 11-party alliance rally in Rangpur on Saturday.

“The people of this country do not engage in extortion,” the Jamaat chief said. “Those who do extortion – how will they understand the suffering of the people?” Criticizing the current government, the opposition leader said that although it had run a “Save Teesta” movement before the election, no allocation had been made for it in the budget. If the 11-party alliance was elected and formed a government in the future, he said, it would implement the Teesta master plan.

He also criticized the government’s silence in the face of what he called Indian aggression at the border, and congratulated the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and ordinary people for their efforts to resist it. Shafiqur Rahman pledged to build the Rangpur division into an “agriculture capital” and, referring to the problems of potato farmers, said they were now being charged 600 taka per sack for cold storage – an injustice to farmers. He demanded that storage costs for potatoes be reduced and fair prices for farm produce ensured.

He pledged that if an 11-party government was formed, there would be no place in the country for extortionists or the corrupt – and that even if the prime minister himself were involved in corruption, he too would be brought to justice.
