DHAKA — The High Court has released the full verdict upholding the death sentences of dismissed Teknaf Police Station Officer-in-Charge Pradeep Kumar Das and dismissed Sub-Inspector Liaqat Ali for the murder of retired Maj. Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan.
Justice Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Sagir Hossain signed the full copy of the verdict and sent it to the section, officials said. The defendants now have 30 days to file an appeal. The verdict also upheld the life imprisonment of six others.
The High Court bench of Justice Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Sagir Hossain released the verdict on Thursday.
The High Court delivered the verdict on June 2 after hearing the death reference and the appeals of the convicts, who had challenged the trial court ruling.
Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail sentenced Pradeep and Liaqat to death and six others to life imprisonment on Jan. 31, 2022, for the murder of the retired major.
Hearings on the death reference and the defendants’ appeals in the case concluded on May 29.
Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was killed at about 9:30 p.m. on July 31, 2020, at the Shamlapur checkpoint on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road. He was shot by Inspector Liaqat Ali, then in charge of the Baharchhara police investigation center.
Five days after the killing, on Aug. 5, 2020, the victim’s sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous filed a case in court. The RAB submitted a charge sheet on Dec. 13, 2020, accusing 15 people.
The charge sheet described Sinha’s killing as a “premeditated murder.”
