Clapping every day may help relieve various ailments, according to its proponents. The hands contain many nerve and blood vessel endings, known as acupressure points, and clapping rubs and presses these areas, stimulating the nerves.
Better circulation: rhythmic clapping is said to increase blood flow throughout the body, helping enough oxygen reach every part and cell, which may help keep the heart healthy and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Better mood: the practice may improve mental health. Clapping is said to release endorphins, which lift mood, and it may help reduce stress and anxiety and calm the mind.
Greater flexibility: regular movement of the palms may ease stiffness in the joints and keep muscles relaxed, helping joints stay mobile, increasing flexibility and reducing the risk of muscle injury.
Weight control: clapping as exercise burns a small number of calories, which may indirectly help reduce fat and control weight.
Feeling refreshed: clapping is said to aid lymphatic drainage, the removal of unwanted or harmful substances from the body.
It is best to clap in the morning. Lightly massage your hands with coconut oil or any oil you like, sit in the lotus or vajrasana position with your spine straight, and practise clapping, starting with two or three minutes, then five minutes the following week, building up to 10 to 15 minutes.
