Wife detained over husband’s poisoning death, road blocked with body

In Barguna, a wife has been accused of killing her husband by feeding him poison over an extramarital affair. Over the incident, relatives of the dead man and local residents confined the accused wife and her mother and blocked a road with the body for about two hours, holding a human chain and demanding their detention. Police later reached the scene, brought the situation under control and detained the wife and her mother on the basis of the complaint.

The incident took place at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, in the Chalitatala area of Keorabunia union on the Barguna-Purakata regional road in Barguna Sadar upazila.

The dead man, Afang Sikder, 45, was the son of the late Khabir Sikder of Chalitatala village in Keorabunia union.

Relatives allege that Afang Sikder had long been abroad for a living. During that time it was alleged that his wife had become involved in an extramarital relationship with another man. On returning home and learning of it, marital discord began between the two.

Over this, the dead man’s relatives allege, his wife fed him rat poison with intent to kill on Saturday, 19 July. The next day, Sunday, 20 July, Afang Sikder was taken to Barguna General Hospital and, after initial treatment, sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) Hospital.

Afang Sikder died while undergoing treatment at SBMC Hospital on Friday, 24 July. When the body was brought home after the post-mortem on Saturday, 25 July, angry relatives and local residents blocked the road with the body. They demanded the arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment.

On being informed, police reached the scene and, with the help of local public representatives, spoke to the protesters and calmed the situation. The wife and her mother were later detained on the basis of the complaint.

On this, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Barguna Sadar police station, Abu Shahadat Md Hachnain Parvez, said: “On receiving news of the incident, police quickly went to the scene and brought the situation under control. Two people have been detained on the basis of local people’s complaint. The process of filing a case in the matter is under way. If the allegations are found true in the investigation, further steps will be taken in accordance with the law.”
