When the reigning European champions’ attack finds its rhythm, there is little comfort in the opposing dugout. With Lamine Yamal’s magic feet and Rodri-Pedri’s precise control, most teams would tremble before facing Spain.

After the way “La Roja” dominated Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, many may see no chance for Austria in the round of 32 clash in Los Angeles. But teams that have fought back from the brink are often the most dangerous.

Spain started their tournament with a goalless draw against Cape Verde before hitting their stride with a 4-0 demolition of Saudi Arabia, driven by Yamal’s brilliance. A 1-0 win over Uruguay then secured top spot in Group H.

Defender Pau Cubarsi said: “We believe in ourselves. The Uruguay match was a battle, but it also gave us the confidence that we know how to fight. We have that warrior mentality, and I think that’s crucial in a tournament like the World Cup.”

Austria’s journey to this stage reads like a thriller. After beating Jordan in their opener, they were brought crashing down by a 2-0 loss to Lionel Messi’s Argentina. But they revived their campaign with a dramatic comeback against Algeria in the final group match to qualify.

Austria coach Ralf Rangnick said: “We know we’re the underdogs, but we also know it only takes one night to make history. Spain are a great team, but we didn’t come this far just to make up the numbers. We have nothing to lose.”
