Former Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has visited the grave of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, his companion of 70 years, three days after her death.
On Thursday morning (October 1), Mahathir went straight from the National Heart Institute (IJN) to the Precinct cemetery in Putrajaya. He scattered flowers on his wife’s grave, raised both hands in prayer and stood silently beside the grave for a while before leaving. He looked calm and sombre at the cemetery.
Siti Hasmah died on September 28 aged 100. It was the first time Mahathir had gone alone to pray at her grave since her state funeral.
Siti Hasmah was a doctor and a well-known figure in Malaysian national life. She married Mahathir in 1956, and they were together for nearly seven decades, with her at his side through the key moments of his long political career.
Mahathir was first prime minister from 1981 to 2003, and became prime minister again in 2018, serving until 2020. Throughout his long political career, Siti Hasmah was active in social and welfare work.
After her death, a state farewell was held for her at Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur on September 28, where members of the royal family, the prime minister, former and current politicians and people from all walks of life paid their last respects.
