MADARIPUR — The body of Sobahan Khan, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi migrant worker who died after falling from the roof of a building under construction in Saudi Arabia, reached his home 20 days after his death.
He was buried at the family graveyard in Paschim Maijpara village in Dasar upazila of Madaripur on Thursday afternoon, April 30. Sobahan was the son of Yusuf Khan of Paschim Maijpara village.
Earlier the same morning, the body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. After legal formalities, it was taken to the family’s village home. Relatives and neighbors broke down in tears.
Relatives and local residents said Sobahan had gone to Saudi Arabia through a recruiter named Nannu in Dasar upazila, spending nearly 600,000 taka (about $5,000) borrowed on credit. He left for Saudi Arabia on November 19, 2025. On April 7, he was working at a building under construction in Riyadh when he accidentally fell into an unfinished elevator shaft and suffered serious head injuries.
Other workers rescued him and took him to Al-Jazeera Hospital’s Nassim branch in Riyadh. He died there while undergoing treatment at about 1:30 p.m. Bangladesh time on April 11. His family received news of his death the following night, April 12. The household was plunged into mourning.
His wife, Mariam Begum, said: “We have been living for a long time in a rented house in the Harikumaria area of Madaripur town with our five children. My husband went abroad after borrowing money. But we never imagined he would die like this. If the government does not help us, it will be very difficult for me to survive with five children.”
Zakia Sultana, the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Dasar in Madaripur, said: “The death of a worker like this in Saudi Arabia is very sad. The upazila administration will try to stand by the deceased’s family.”
