US President Donald Trump has approved a historic agreement with Saudi Arabia. The deal is thought likely to allow Riyadh to acquire uranium enrichment capability for its civil nuclear programme. The information came on Wednesday, July 22, from two sources connected with the matter.
According to the sources, no formal announcement had been made, but the deal was due to be announced publicly on Wednesday.
According to the report, first published in The Wall Street Journal, the agreement will run for 30 years, with US firms directly involved in developing Saudi Arabia’s nuclear programme. Under one provision, US companies will be able to build a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia after a joint US-Saudi study.
Analysts say the deal opens the prospect of billions of dollars in revenue for the US nuclear industry. The agreement is expected to be submitted to the US Congress for review before final approval.
Saudi Arabia is a member state of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which promotes peaceful nuclear programmes worldwide. Both the current president, Trump, and former president Joe Biden had earlier tried to reach an agreement with Riyadh on transferring US nuclear technology.
Most recently, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright visited Riyadh just before Donald Trump’s Saudi trip last year, holding detailed talks with his Saudi counterpart on developing a commercial nuclear power industry in the country.
