Two workers die of gas poisoning in septic tank in Patuakhali

Two workers have died of toxic gas poisoning after entering a septic tank in Patuakhali. The accident occurred around 11 a.m. Wednesday at an under-construction building at the Sikder house in Chouddaburia village of Kamalapur union in Sadar upazila, when the two went in to remove the centering wood and bamboo from inside the septic tank. The dead are Mohammad Nuh, 25, and Mohammad Ashraf Chowkidar, also known as Ashraf Molla, 50, both of Chouddaburia village.

Local residents and eyewitnesses said workers Nuh and Ashraf went down to work inside a newly built septic tank for a bathroom at the Sikder house. Nuh fell in first, and when Ashraf went to rescue him he also fell into the septic tank. Local people later broke part of the septic tank and recovered the two workers dead.

Local union council member Abu Jafar said the incident was deeply tragic. The two dead workers, Ashraf and Nuh, were from Chouddaburia village in Kamalapur and lived next door to each other, he said, adding that Ashraf was a mason and Nuh a day laborer.

Patuakhali Sadar police station officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman said the two workers died while going in to remove the centering of a new septic tank at a house in the area. One fell in first, and the other fell in while trying to rescue him. Both died inside the septic tank from toxic gas poisoning. An unnatural death case is being prepared over the incident, he said.
