The government is tightening fragrant-rice exports as domestic demand and prices rise. The Commerce Ministry is considering reducing or adjusting previously approved quotas and has asked approved companies to submit details of actual exports within three working days.

In May, 278 companies were approved to export 45,270 tonnes. Many did not use their full quotas, so the ministry is collecting updated company-level data. Traders allege that major mill owners are withholding rice and creating an artificial shortage. The ministry plans stronger market monitoring with the consumer-rights directorate and business groups. After verifying the data, it will decide whether to reduce or adjust quotas while maintaining domestic supply and preserving opportunities for genuine exporters.
