Police have recovered the body of a retired police officer, Manoj Kanti Das, from a house in the Bagbari area of Sylhet city.
The officer in charge of the Kotwali police station of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), Khan Mohammad Moinul Zakir, confirmed the information on Wednesday (29 July).
His body had been recovered around midnight from the second floor of house No. 259 in the Narsingtila area of Bagbari.
Manoj Kanti Das was the son of the late Mahim Chandra Das of Narkila village in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj. He had recently retired from the post of sub-inspector (SI) while serving in Moulvibazar.
According to police and family sources, Manoj Kanti Das’s wife, a school teacher, died in a road accident last year. Since then he had been living alone on the second floor of the house, which belonged to his in-laws. Other members of the family lived on the ground floor.
On the night in question, with the door of his room locked from the inside and no response coming from him, family members called the national emergency service 999. Police and fire service personnel then went to the scene, broke down the door and recovered his body from the floor of the room.
The officer in charge, Khan Mohammad Moinul Zakir, said blood had been coming from the dead man’s nose. The preliminary assumption was that he might have died of a stroke in his sleep, he said, but the necessary legal process was under way to determine the actual cause of death. Preparations were being made to file an unnatural death (UD) case at the police station over the incident.
