Four people were killed when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with an oil tanker truck in Osmaninagar on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway. Two of the dead were men and two were women. Two died at the scene, while two others died after being taken to hospital. Three more people were injured in the crash.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, August 22, in the Brahmangram (Kosortol) area of Osmaninagar upazila on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
According to police and local sources, an oil tanker truck heading from Sylhet to Dhaka collided head-on with a passenger-carrying CNG auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction upon reaching the Brahmangram area of Osmaninagar. The auto-rickshaw was crushed in the collision, and its seven passengers were injured.
Local residents rescued the injured and took them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Two of them died at the scene. Two more later died while undergoing treatment at the hospital. The identities of the deceased were not immediately known.
Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar police station, and Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the highway police’s Sherpur station, said several critically injured people were sent to hospital after the crash. Two deaths were reported first, followed by two more deaths during treatment. Their identities could not be immediately confirmed, they said, and police are working to establish them.
This is the second fatal crash on this stretch of highway in just over two weeks. On the morning of August 7, nine people were killed when two buses, belonging to Unique Paribahan and Bengal Paribahan, collided head-on on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway in Osmaninagar.
