A 70-year-old man, Nabi Hossain, has died after being punched and beaten when he went to protect his grandson, who was being assaulted at a village arbitration over an allegation of mobile phone theft in South Gaffargaon in Mymensingh.
The incident took place on Sunday night, 26 July, at a local BNP leader’s office at Badal Market in Atpara village in Usthi union of the upazila. A case has been filed at Pagla police station.
According to police and local sources, a mobile phone belonging to a resident of Hatpara village under Pagla police station in South Gaffargaon upazila was stolen about a month ago. On suspicion of stealing the phone, a 20-year-old man from the same village was taken from his home to the BNP office by a group of people. At one point during the arbitration he was tied to a post at the BNP office and beaten severely.
His elderly grandfather, Md Nabi Hossain, went forward at his grandson’s cries. Those present at the arbitration grew angry, called the grandson a thief and began punching and striking Nabi Hossain indiscriminately in the chest and on other parts of his body. He lost consciousness. On receiving the news, relatives rescued him in a critical condition and took him to Gaffargaon upazila health complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
The dead man’s nephew, Jalil, said local BNP leaders had seized his relative and were beating him over a false allegation of mobile phone theft. His uncle, Nabi Hossain, was assaulted too when he went to save his grandson. He was later rescued in a critical condition and taken to the upazila health complex, where he died.
Confirming the incident, the officer in charge of Pagla police station, Md Aminul Islam, said efforts were under way to arrest those accused.
