A mobile court has sentenced a retail fertilizer dealer to one month in prison and fined him 30,000 taka for illegally stockpiling fertilizer at Uchakhila Bazar in Ishwarganj upazila, Mymensingh. In the same operation, another fertilizer dealer was fined 5,000 taka for failing to produce valid documentation.
The operation was carried out at Uchakhila Bazar on Monday afternoon, August 24, based on intelligence information.
During the raid, 636 sacks of fertilizer were seized from the warehouse of retail dealer Nur-E-Alam, including 391 sacks of urea, 160 sacks of DAP and 85 sacks of MOP fertilizer. The seized fertilizer was later sold to Shamsul Haque, the main fertilizer dealer for Uchakhila union, at the government-set price.
According to the mobile court, Nur-E-Alam, son of Fazlul Haque and owner of Bhai Bhai Traders in Uchakhila union, was sentenced to one month in prison without labor and fined 30,000 taka under Section 12 of the Fertilizer (Management) Act, 2006, for illegally stockpiling fertilizer.
Separately, retail fertilizer dealer Shyamal Chandra Saha, from the same market, was fined 5,000 taka under the same law for failing to produce valid documentation.
During the operation, Upazila Agriculture Officer Ripa Rani Chowhan presented the case to the mobile court and assisted in taking action under the law. The mobile court was conducted by Ishwarganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Sanjida Rahman.
Executive Magistrate Sanjida Rahman said the administration is regularly monitoring the market to ensure an adequate supply of fertilizer for farmers at government-set prices. There is no scope for creating artificial shortages through illegal stockpiling, selling at inflated prices, or operating a fertilizer business without valid documentation, she said, adding that strict action would be taken under the law against such irregularities. She said such operations and monitoring would continue in the interest of farmers.
