An awareness rally on preventing drug abuse, online gambling, mobile-phone addiction, child marriage, violence against women, eve-teasing and suicide, and on improving the quality of education, was held in Bamundi in Gangni upazila of Meherpur.
The rally took place on Tuesday (14 July) afternoon at the old Bamundi Union Parishad grounds, organised by the Gangni upazila administration and the Bamundi Union Parishad.
Meherpur District Commissioner Shilpi Rani Ray was chief guest at the event, which was chaired by Gangni Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Anwar Hossain.
“The government is working tirelessly to advance women’s education,” she said. “Every family must give its daughters the chance to get an education. An educated woman plays a vital role in carrying the family, society and the state forward.”
Speaking as special guest, Meherpur Superintendent of Police Ujjwal Kumar Roy said drug abuse, online gambling and mobile-phone addiction were pushing young people towards ruin, and that families, educational institutions, public representatives and the administration would have to work together to check these social ills.
The rally, conducted by freedom fighter Dr Nurul Huda, was also addressed by Gangni upazila BNP general secretary Abdul Awal, Bamundi union BNP president Rashidul Islam Sohag, Gangni upazila Jubo Dal president Jahidul Islam Jahid, upazila Swechchhasebak Dal member secretary Harun or Rashid Bachchu, Jubo Dal leader Samrat Biswas, and Bamundi Union Parishad acting chairman Shah Alam.
Heads of local educational institutions, teachers, students, public representatives and local dignitaries were present. Speakers urged everyone to help prevent social crimes, stop child marriage and violence against women, and improve the environment for education.
