Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday posted four verses of the holy Quran, from Surah Al-Mu’minun, on its Facebook page. In verses 2 to 5 of the surah, describing some of the qualities of the believers, Almighty Allah says:
“Those who are humble in their prayers; who turn away from idle talk; who pay the zakat; and who guard their chastity.” These four verses in fact set out a complete and balanced framework covering everything — a person’s private worship, social conduct, economic responsibility and moral character. The Quran says that those who can attain these qualities will ultimately be the heirs of Jannatul Firdaus, the highest paradise.
Explaining the practical dimension of verse 2, exegetes say prayer is not merely the mechanical performance of bowing and prostration. Keeping the mind free of worldly thoughts, of business or of the mobile-phone screen during prayer, and keeping the body still, is part of this quality. The believer feels that he is standing before Allah and that Allah is watching him.
On the practical dimension of verse 3, it is said that in the present age this includes engaging in needless arguments on social media, trolling, backbiting, meaningless chatter or time-wasting entertainment. A successful believer understands the value of his time and carefully keeps away from whatever brings no benefit.
The practical dimension of verse 4 is that when the poor acquire a right or claim over one’s wealth, it should be handed over willingly and in the proper manner to those in need. On one hand this purifies the soul by removing miserliness and greed from the heart; on the other, it reduces economic inequality in society.
The practical dimension of verse 5 is that in a modern society where pornography, unrestricted mixing and immoral relationships are so easily available, a believer keeps his eyes, mind and character within the bounds set by Allah. Its central purpose is to protect oneself from every kind of immorality outside the lawful bond of marriage.
