Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said the party has already formed a shadow cabinet, whose members are currently undergoing training. The names of the shadow cabinet members will be formally announced soon, he said.
He shared the information during Monday’s exchange with editors at the opposition leader’s official residence on Minto Road in the capital.
Following the meeting, Amar Desh editor and National Editors’ Council (NEC) joint convener Mahmudur Rahman told reporters: “Journalists suggested that the opposition form a shadow cabinet. Opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman welcomed the proposal and said they had already formed one, and that training is currently under way.”
The Amar Desh editor said: “Our country’s politicians commonly have a habit of speaking on every issue, but with a shadow cabinet, specific individuals will speak on specific subjects. This will not only create constant, constructive pressure on the government, but will also serve as valuable training for the opposition in how to run a future government.”
He added: “Democracy has begun in Bangladesh since the July uprising, and media freedom has returned. The editors have pledged that the media will not lean toward any party, and will instead carry out its duties professionally.”
