The minister of education and of primary and mass education, Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon, has said that building a strong position in sport on the international stage is among the government’s commitments. To that end, a talent hunt scheme will be launched in educational institutions. Opening the way for the development of hidden talent is the aim, he said. The safety of, and opportunities for, women athletes would be increased. The sports economy would be expanded; joyful education ensured; and young people turned, through sport, into healthy and skilled human resources.
He made the remarks at a news conference at the Chattogram Press Club on Thursday (30 July) for the Prime Minister’s Gold Cup national football tournament.
He said the tournament would be inaugurated in all upazilas of the country on the same day and at the same time from Chattogram. Because of the recent flood situation in Chattogram and preparations, however, the inauguration is now planned for 9 and 10 September, instead of the previously fixed 9 August.
The education minister said the participation of female students of madrasas, schools and colleges in the tournament is optional. They may join if they wish, or not. It has been kept optional, he said.
The present government’s election manifesto contains certain commitments on education, he said. The first is expanding sport at the grassroots level. Establishing sport as a profession is also a commitment of the manifesto.
Dr Milon said about 1.6 crore students in the country would be connected with the event. Students would have the chance to take part from 19,221 secondary schools, 1,956 schools and colleges, 3,380 colleges, 9,296 madrasas and 678 technical institutions in the country. The state minister for land and Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs, Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, the mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, Dr Shahadat Hossain, members of parliament from various constituencies, the secretary of the secondary and higher education division, Abdul Khaleq, and other senior officials were present.
