The government has formed a “Social Media Monitoring Committee” to monitor social media use by teachers and staff under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE). Professor Tipu Sultan, director of the Monitoring and Evaluation Wing, has been made convener of the committee.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education disclosed the information in a letter Monday, August 17.

The letter states that any content on social media found to violate guidelines, or deemed objectionable, misleading, or false, must be forwarded, along with a screenshot, to the committee’s convener.

The letter further states that government officials and staff are required to properly follow the Cabinet Division’s “Guidelines on the Use of Social Media at Government Institutions, 2019 (revised edition)” and the government code of conduct when using social media. The committee has been formed to monitor whether these directives are being properly followed.

If any member under the DSHE publishes or shares a status, comment, photo, video, post, or other content on social media that violates the guidelines, it must be properly preserved as soon as it is noticed and reported to the committee’s convener on a priority basis, the directive states.

In such cases, the relevant official’s name, designation, and workplace, the name of the social media platform used, a link to the account or profile, the date and time the post was published, and a screenshot of the post or other relevant evidence must be submitted.

According to the directive, this information must be sent to the committee convener’s email address.

Copies of the letter have been sent to all DSHE directors, regional directors, principals, senior system analysts, and the director general’s personal assistant.
