A man has been killed by his younger brother over a family dispute in Gosairhat upazila of Shariatpur. The dead man, Amir Hossain Sardar, 45, was a resident of the Holipatti area of Idilpur union in the upazila. He was the eldest of five brothers.
The incident took place at about midnight on Tuesday in Ward No. 4 of Holipatti in Idilpur union.
According to the family of the deceased and local sources, the youngest son in the family, Sohel Sardar, accused the fourth brother, Juyel Sardar, 27, of stealing some money. Centering on the incident, an argument first broke out between the two brothers. On learning of the matter, the eldest brother, Amir Hossain Sardar, came to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. At one point he slapped Juyel Sardar several times to discipline him. Enraged, Juyel Sardar struck Amir Hossain on the head with a piece of wood from behind.
Seriously injured, he collapsed to the ground. Locals later rescued him and took him to Gosairhat Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he died on the way to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for better treatment.
Rashida Begum, the dead man’s sister, said: “My eldest brother lost his life trying to stop a quarrel between the brothers. We want a proper trial of this killing. He lost his life today while trying to discipline them as the eldest brother.”
The dead man’s wife, Laiju Begum, said in a tearful voice: “A quarrel broke out over money between the youngest brother, Sohel, and the middle brother, Juyel. My husband was sitting by the roadside looking at his phone at the time. Later, when he went to settle the matter, Juyel became enraged. A little while later he suddenly came from behind and struck my husband on the head with a piece of wood. Then my husband said only one last thing: ‘Take me to the hospital quickly.'”
Gosairhat police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Borhan Uddin said it had initially been learned that the killing took place over a family dispute. The body of the deceased has been sent to the Shariatpur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The accused, Juyel Sardar, is at large. Several police teams are working to arrest him. Legal action is under way over the incident, he said.
