Iran has said that honoring Lebanon’s sovereignty and respecting the country’s territorial integrity is a key part of an interim agreement signed with the United States. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks at a news conference on Monday (June 15).

He made clear that Lebanon forms a highly sensitive and important part of the memorandum of understanding. Tehran is closely monitoring the ongoing situation there and developments of all kinds, he said.

At the news conference, Baghaei expressed deep sympathy for the people of Lebanon. Condemning what he called a recent terrorist attack by Zionist forces in Lebanon, he said Iran would make its own decisions on the basis of specific and strategic calculations in response to such aggression.

Analysts consider Iran’s statement significant in the current geopolitical context. They said the diplomatic understanding between Tehran and Washington, particularly on the question of Lebanon’s sovereignty, could have a major impact on maintaining regional stability and security in the Middle East in the days ahead.
