Alongside a heavy defeat to England in the first Test of the series at Headingley, Pakistan have also become the owners of an unwanted record. They became the first team in Test history to lose their first wicket for a team score of zero in both innings of the same match.
In the first innings, Ollie Robinson had Pakistan opener Ayaan Wais out lbw for a duck. The same thing happened again at the start of the second innings, with Imam-ul-Haq falling to Jofra Archer without scoring. Losing the first wicket for zero in a Test is not unusual on its own, but doing so in both innings of the same match is extremely rare.
Pakistan now sit at the top of this unwanted record, having lost their first wicket for zero in both innings of the same Test a total of seven times. England follow with five instances, Australia with four, India with two, and New Zealand with one.
Pakistan’s batting failure at the Headingley Test was total. After being bowled out for 171 in the first innings, they folded for just 135 in the second. England, by contrast, scored 406 in a single innings. As a result, the hosts won by an innings and 103 runs.
English pace bowler Ollie Robinson was a major factor behind Pakistan’s batting collapse, taking eight wickets across the two innings to win the player-of-the-match award. His bowling figures in the first innings were 5 for 51.
Pakistan came out to bat in the second innings trailing by 238 runs. Their troubles deepened immediately when Imam-ul-Haq departed for a duck off Archer. Shan Masud then tried to mount some resistance with a few boundaries, but England’s bowlers kept up the pressure, and Abdullah Shafique was also out caught.
Josh Tongue then dealt Pakistan’s middle order a heavy blow, removing Saud Shakeel before sending both Shan Masud and Salman Agha back to the pavilion in the same over, effectively knocking the tourists out of the match.
Mohammad Rizwan tried to mount some resistance with a fighting innings of 41, but Robinson kept striking at the other end. Gus Atkinson later ended Rizwan’s innings, and Archer wrapped up Pakistan’s innings by dismissing the last batter in the 38th over.
Pakistan had also struggled against England’s pace bowlers in the first innings. Robinson, with figures of 5 for 51, and Josh Tongue, with 5 for 46, bowled Pakistan out for 171. In reply, four England middle-order batters scored half-centuries to build a big total: Harry Brook made 91, Jordan Cox 73, Joe Root 66 and Dan Lawrence 51.
