China has rejected a European Union allegation that Chinese military personnel trained Russian soldiers involved in the Ukraine war, the Anadolu Agency reported.
On Tuesday, China’s Foreign Ministry called the allegation baseless. Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the claim had no factual basis and amounted to slander and defamation.
Earlier, at a meeting of the foreign ministers of the 27 EU member states held in Luxembourg, the bloc’s foreign-policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said the EU had verified reports of Russian troops being trained by Chinese military personnel and was carefully assessing the potential implications.
Chinese state media reported that Beijing had formally denied the allegation and suggested it was politically motivated.
Kallas also said the EU foreign ministers had agreed at the meeting to impose new sanctions on several Chinese entities. The names of the entities and details of the sanctions were not immediately disclosed.
Diplomatic tensions between China and the European Union have been rising in recent times over the Ukraine war. While Western countries have voiced concern over China’s stance toward Russia, Beijing has repeatedly maintained that it has kept a neutral position on the conflict.
