With the resignation of President Md Sahabuddin, the “dark shadow of autocracy” has, belatedly, lifted from the nation, the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Leader of the Opposition, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, has said.

He made the remarks at an urgent press conference organised by Jamaat-e-Islami at the Leader of the Opposition’s official residence on Minto Road in the capital at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Jamaat-e-Islami Amir, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, congratulated the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, on taking over as acting president. At the same time he called for the duties to be discharged with neutrality, honesty and in accordance with the constitution.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman said one of the demands of the mass uprising had been that Md Sahabuddin would not remain in the office of president. At one time, he said, the president had clearly stated that Sheikh Hasina had submitted her resignation letter to him; he later denied that statement and lied, which was a violation of the oath he took as president. Belatedly, he said, the shadow left behind by fascism had lifted from the nation’s shoulders.

He said: “Our expectation is that the acting president will discharge his duties without bias and with neutrality. Jamaat-e-Islami will give him all-out cooperation in carrying out this responsibility. We want the next president to be someone who is not a flatterer.”

Addressing the outgoing president, he said that in the 2024 genocide he had played the role of a silent accomplice.
