TEHRAN — Iran is offering to transfer its stockpile of enriched uranium to Russia rather than the United States as part of its latest peace proposal, according to a leaked document reported by Saudi outlet Al Hadath. The proposal was relayed to Washington via Pakistan.

Al Hadath’s Monday report was republished in English by Russian state media outlet RT. According to the report, Iran is prepared to suspend its nuclear program for an extended period — on condition that its highly enriched uranium be handed to Russia rather than to the United States.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran currently holds more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent. Nuclear weapons typically require uranium enriched to 90 percent or higher.

Moscow has offered to help end the U.S.-Iran standoff from the outset and has expressed interest in storing the Iranian uranium on Russian soil. Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters: “We’ve not only proposed this — we successfully implemented such a proposal in 2015.”

U.S. outlet Axios reported on Monday that Washington has rejected Tehran’s latest proposal, calling it a nominal rework of the earlier offer rather than a substantive new one.

Since the start of talks aimed at permanently ending hostilities, Trump has demanded that Iran’s enriched uranium be handed to Washington. In an interview with Fox News last week, he said receiving the uranium would give him “peace of mind.”
