ABU DHABI — A drone strike hit a nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi, sparking a fire at the site, the influential Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported Sunday, May 17, citing UAE authorities.
Abu Dhabi authorities said the strike caused no casualties and had no impact on radiation levels.
In a post on social media, the Abu Dhabi Media Office said the drone strike ignited a fire in a generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Al Dhafra region. Authorities responded quickly and brought the situation under control, the post said.
There was no radiation risk and no impact on plant operations, the office said. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation confirmed that the fire did not affect the plant’s safety or critical systems, and all units are operating normally.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the latest attack on the country.
Although a ceasefire between the United States and Iran took effect April 8, the UAE has been struck repeatedly since then. The Emirates has blamed Iran for the attacks.
