Nurul Islam Saddam, central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, has said ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina must be brought back to the country to carry out the death sentence handed down against her. He called for the government to take the necessary steps through talks with the Indian government and via Interpol to bring this about.

Saddam made the remarks while speaking to journalists at a freshers’ reception and career-guideline event held Saturday, August 22, at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Ruhul Amin Auditorium of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU).

On the question of Sheikh Hasina’s return, the Chhatra Shibir president said: “I think the whole nation of Bangladesh is waiting, worried this authoritarianism will return. She has been sentenced to death, and she needs to return so that sentence can be carried out.”

He added: “She’s said several times before, ‘I’m coming, I’ll come.’ She’s said, ‘I’m right nearby, I’ll slip back in any moment.’ But she keeps saying she’s coming and never comes. That’s their character.”

Calling on the government to bring Sheikh Hasina back to the country, Saddam Hossain said: “Sheikh Hasina carried out a genocide. I appeal to the government to swiftly carry out her death sentence. Even if it takes talks with the Indian government through Interpol, she must be brought back to the country and her death sentence carried out.”

The event was moderated by Abdur Rahman, general secretary of NSTU’s Chhatra Shibir chapter. The chief guest was Professor Muhammad Atiar Rahman, former vice-chancellor of Rangamati Science and Technology University. The keynote speaker was Nurul Islam Saddam, central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir. Tafhimul Islam Maruf, former president of NSTU’s Chhatra Shibir chapter, attended as special guest. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ishaq Khandaker attended as an invited guest.

NSTU’s Chhatra Shibir chapter organized the “Freshers’ Reception and Career Guideline” event to welcome incoming students of the 2024-25 academic year. About 1,100 new students were given copies of the Quran at the event, along with books, pens, flowers and other gifts.
