The entire government ‘syndicate’ is involved in the drug trade, the central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Nurul Islam Saddam, has alleged.
‘The government’s entire syndicate is involved with drugs. They control a business worth hundreds of thousands of crores of taka. They do not let society remain stable. The moment we speak against drugs, we are branded “razakar.” Within a day of Sylhet’s deputy commissioner declaring zero tolerance against drugs at a shrine, he was removed,’ he said.
He made the remarks on Monday as chief guest at a reception for first-year honours students at Satkhira Government College.
He further said: ‘The prime minister blames it on Jamaat supposedly being unhappy over the increase in drug prices in the budget. The prime minister says such things after seeing a fake photo-card. It is pitiable that the prime minister of a country does not properly understand the rules of the budget. In my view, the prime minister does not know the laws, yet is running the state. Do not mislead the nation with falsehoods.’
The reception was presided over by the president of Satkhira Government College Chhatra Shibir, Md Rafiqul Islam, and conducted by its secretary, Ziaur Rahman Fahim, with Nurul Islam Saddam attending as chief guest.
Those present as special guests included the central college-affairs secretary of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Hafez Yusuf Islahi; the ameer of Satkhira district Jamaat-e-Islami, vice-principal Shahidul Islam Mukul; city Shibir president Mehedi Hasan; and city Shibir secretary Md Nurunnabi. Invited guests included the Satkhira district Jamaat secretary, Maulana Azizur Rahman; the city Jamaat ameer, Zahidul Islam Bakul; the sadar upazila secretary, Maulana Habibur Rahman; the former central HRD secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Abdur Rahim; the district Shibir president, Zubayer Rahman; and the Satkhira district Jamaat office secretary, Maulana Ruhul Amin.
